ABOUT KITTY GRASS

Do cats really eat it?

Yes! Most of the cats in our experience eat it, many with great enthusiasm, some just an occasional nibble.

Is it just like grass in the yard?

No, lawn grass is coarser which can cause digestive upset. Rosy's 100% Organic Kitty Grass is a blend of tender young sprouted grains that are more easily digested.

Why do cats like it?

It's natural for animals, even carnivores, to have greens in their diet.

If my cat eats it, does it mean he's sick?

Cats will sometimes seek out grass if their stomach is upset, but they also seem to just enjoy having a salad!

Why is it good for them?

Rosy's Kitty Grass provides a significant amount of fiber which helps keep the digestive tract running efficiently and helps your cat eliminate hairballs. The young sprouted grass also contains many healthy attributes including chlorophyll, enzymes, amino acids, vitamins and minerals.

Will it make my cat throw up?

Although cats sometimes throw up anything they eat, Rosy's 100% Organic Kitty Grass is less irritating than lawn grass.

Can they eat too much?

Some cats get so excited when they have Rosy's 100% Organic Kitty Grass for the first time or when they get a new pot, that they mow the whole thing down and immediately throw up. We suggest monitoring your cat initially and letting them nibble just a small amount at first. If your kitty has it available routinely, he/she is less likely to overdo it.

How do I feed it?

Most cats will eat it right from the pot, though we've heard some cats have trained their human companions to hand feed it to them!

How long does it last?

Rosy's 100% Organic Kitty Grass should last approximately two weeks if kept watered. You can refrigerate it when your cat is not eating it.

How do I take care of it?

Keep it in a bright but cool spot in your home and water when it looks or feels dry.

Can I plant it in the garden?

Yes, but it will grow taller and coarser as it matures (and may grow out of reach of your pet!). It's at its best when young and tender.

ABOUT US

Woodrose Gardens...

was established on the first day of spring, March 20, 1991, in the picturesque town of Sebastopol, in rural Sonoma County, California. The site is approximately 50 miles north of San Francisco and 15 miles east of the town of Bodega Bay, site of the Alfred Hitchcock thriller “The Birds.”

Partners Nancy Fortner and Alan Salazar...

met in a horticulture class at San Francisco City College and began dreaming of starting a plant nursery. They moved to Sebastopol in December 1990, one of the coldest winters on record. After thawing out, greenhouses and coldframes were built and they began growing flowers, vegetable starts and herbs, concentrating on unusual and heirloom varieties. They were growing organic plants before it became the all the rage to do so. Many popular garden items in stores today may have gotten their start by appearing first at the Woodrose Gardens Farmer's Market stands, including organically grown lettuce mixes, mixed herb container gardens, and of course Kitty Grass!

The name Woodrose Gardens...

was coined by a visiting friend. While strolling down the driveway, he began picking up cedar seed cones and remarked that they looked like “wood roses!”

The Start of Rosy's Kitty Grass!

Nancy had grown a simple version of Kitty Grass for her cats back in San Francisco to lure them away from eating an apartment full of houseplants and flowers (spider plants and vases of carnations were particular favorites). It worked!

She introduced Rosy's Kitty Grass at a Farmer's Market and was surprised at the enthusiastic response. Customers wanted more of this unusual item that hadn't been offered before. When pet stores were approached about marketing the product, it was so new that there was a lot of convincing to do. Now pet and grocery stores consider “cat grass” a must-have product in their inventories.

The brand name “Rosy's”...

was created in honor of the first pet that made its home at the new Woodrose Gardens: a feral black cat born in the garage that first spring. Nancy drew Rosy's likeness which became the black cat logo for the “Rosy's” brand.

Other important members of Woodrose Gardens:

Theo is the most recent addition to the family. A handsome tuxedo cat, he made the rounds of the neighborhood before deciding he wanted to live at Woodrose Gardens. Quincy and Rudy are twins, adopted from a shelter during a Buy 1 Get 1 Free Black Cat sale!

Milo Thelma is a sweet but shy black cat, whose sister Louise had already been adopted from the shelter. Tasha is a deaf tabby cat who was picked up by animal control in a “rough” part of town. Violet is a Chow/Lab mix shelter dog adopted at the same time as Tasha. Milo is another rescue pup, who was thought to be part border collie. DNA tests discovered he's a St. Bernard/Dachshund cross!

BLACK CATS

Many years ago...

I was in need of a cat and visited a local shelter. I was looking for one with a specific personality, one who would accept my 11 year old cat who had just lost his companion. A  young girl of about 12 was volunteering that day and was anxiously showing me cat after cat. I started getting confused because she had shown me several black cats. I asked her how she told them apart. She pointed out the minute differences-this one had a small white locket of fur, that one had gold eyes, etc. I picked out Zena, a 3 year old female with “sparse eyebrows.” She turned out to be the perfect cat. I learned that day that black cats are often overlooked in shelters. Whether it's superstition or fading into the background in a sea of multi-hued cats, they are the least likely to be adopted and shelters are overflowing with them. I think they look like little panthers. Their faces are distilled down to their expressive eyes. Now I can't get enough of them! There have been four in my household in past years and we currently live with three of them. Yes, I do color code them with collars! If I were to look for a common thread among these personalities, it would be a self-assuredness and a happy-go-lucky attitude. They're great cats and I highly recommend them!
